GTA 6 Gives You Two Leads Where GTA V Had Three. What Else Changes Now

Updated 2026-10-17

GTA 6 differs from GTA V in several key ways, starting with its two confirmed playable leads and its new setting. The game launches on 19 November 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with no PC version or release date announced yet.

This comparison details every confirmed difference between the two games, from the characters and world to the platforms and online plans. It focuses on facts confirmed by Rockstar, reported details from credible outlets, and what remains unknown before launch day.

Two leads versus three, and a new state to explore

GTA 6 features two protagonists, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. This is a shift from GTA V, which gave players three main characters: Michael, Franklin, and Trevor.

The story is set in the state of Leonida, home to Vice City. Rockstar has confirmed six regions: Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga. This contrasts with GTA V's setting of Los Santos and Blaine County in the state of San Andreas.

Leonida is Rockstar's take on Florida. The official site only calls it "the sunshine state," but the studio's senior team named Florida in an interview with LOVE magazine. The story follows Jason, who grew up around criminals and served in the Army, and Lucia, who was taught to fight by her father and served time in Leonida Penitentiary.

Platforms and the missing PC date

GTA 6 launches only on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on 19 November 2026. This is a next-gen-only launch, with no version for PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.

A PC release date for GTA 6 has not been announced. This follows a pattern from Rockstar's history. GTA V first released on consoles in September 2013 and came to PC in April 2015, an 18-month gap. Red Dead Redemption 2 launched on consoles in October 2018 and on PC in November 2019, a 12-month wait.

If GTA 6 follows a similar pattern, a PC version could land in 2027. However, this is only an estimate based on past releases and is not confirmed by Rockstar.

The map size question and online mode

Rockstar has not published an official GTA 6 map size or a full map. Any comparison of the GTA 6 map vs the GTA 5 map lacks a concrete answer. Fan projects exist but are estimates. The real comparison will be possible on launch day.

The online mode for GTA 6 has also not been detailed. Rockstar has not announced its name, features, or launch timing. In contrast, GTA Online launched two weeks after GTA V, on 1 October 2013. Red Dead Online launched as a beta about a month after Red Dead Redemption 2.

The history suggests an online component will follow, but its nature and release window remain unknown.

What is reported and what is not announced

Several details come from reports rather than official confirms. Rockstar has confirmed that boxed copies contain a download code, and outlets report there will be no Blu-ray game disc at launch.

Pre-orders opened on 25 June 2026, and preloading begins on 12 November 2026. The standard edition costs $79.99, with the Ultimate Edition at $99.99.

Many aspects are not announced. Rockstar has not published a weapon list, vehicle list, mission list, or cheat codes for GTA 6. The voice cast is uncredited by Rockstar, and the age rating so far comes from the store listings, which show ESRB M and PEGI 18.

What changes on 19 November

This page is based on pre-launch information and will be updated with full details once GTA 6 is out on 19 November 2026.

At that point, players will have the final answers on the map size, the full scope of regions like Vice City and the Leonida Keys, the complete weapon and vehicle lists, and the specifics of any online mode.

Until then, the confirmed differences are the two leads, the Leonida setting, the next-gen-only console launch, and the lack of a PC date.
