Grassrivers Hides Worse Than Gators in GTA 6. Why You Still Have No Name for It

Updated 2026-11-03

Grassrivers is the wetland region of Leonida in GTA 6, a stretch of swamp, mangroves and open water that Rockstar introduces with the line "Welcome to the Wetlands". It is one of the six places profiled on Rockstar's official GTA VI site, and every clue so far points to the real Everglades of South Florida, even though Rockstar itself has never put those two names side by side.

The detail most players remember comes straight from Rockstar's own copy. The gators may be the most famous attraction, the page says, but there are far deadlier predators and weirder discoveries waiting among the mangroves. Rockstar does not say what those predators are, and nobody outside the studio knows yet.

What Rockstar says about Grassrivers

Rockstar calls Grassrivers the untamable jewel of Leonida's crown and describes it as a primordial expanse where you never know what lies beneath the surface. That is the whole of the official text. It is short, and it is built around one idea, which is that the water is the danger and the gators are only the part you can see.

The four official screenshots fill in the mood. Each one below is described from Rockstar's own caption, so none of it is guesswork.

  • A speed boat heads toward buildings standing on piers over the water, with the Vice City skyline visible in the distance.
  • Three people covered in mud pose on an airboat with a dead alligator and a wildcat, one with an automatic weapon against his leg and another holding a rifle.
  • A top-down shot of two people in an airboat surrounded by alligators, one of them aiming a gun at the closest animal.
  • A helicopter and two police cars chase a pickup truck through the swamp, past alligators, with an airboat in the background.

What the trailers show

Trailer 1, released on 4 December 2023, was the first look at the swamp. Kotaku's Alyssa Mercante wrote that the trailer pulls away from Vice City to the Florida Everglades and picked out a fan boat whizzing through a swamp at sunset. The Guardian listed alligators among the mostly illegal Floridian antics in the same video.

Not every gator in the footage is in the swamp, though. Kotaku also spotted a man trying to fish a gator out of an in-ground pool and a different gator strutting through the front door of a convenience store, which suggests the animals do not stay politely inside one region of the map.

An Extended Look, the long gameplay video from 27 August 2026, added wildlife. Kotaku spotted a small pod of manatees swimming through the swamps of Leonida. Rockstar has not said which region that scene belongs to, so treat it as swamp footage rather than a confirmed Grassrivers moment.

The real Everglades behind Grassrivers

The strongest link comes from Rockstar's own team. In an interview with LOVE magazine published on 5 October 2026, Aaron Garbut of Rockstar North said he and some of the art directors spent a day hanging out of the side of a helicopter filming the Everglades and the city from the air, flying low and fast over the mangrove inlets. Mangroves are exactly what the Grassrivers profile mentions.

Kotaku made the same connection back in December 2023 when it named the Everglades as one of the Florida places Trailer 1 shows. So the comparison is reported by outlets and backed by Rockstar's account of its research trips, but Rockstar has not said that Grassrivers is a copy of the Everglades, and the region will be its own invented place.

The name is worth a second look too. The real Everglades are flooded grasslands in southern Florida, nicknamed the River of Grass after Marjory Stoneman Douglas described them that way in 1947. Grassrivers reads like a play on that nickname. That reading is ours, since Rockstar has never explained the name.

Real Florida also explains the cast of animals. The American alligator is native to the southeastern United States, and the Florida panther, a cougar population, lives in South Florida. The wildcat in Rockstar's airboat screenshot is only called a wildcat in the caption, so it would be a stretch to name the species.

What is still unknown

  • How big Grassrivers is and where its edges sit. Rockstar's own caption puts the Vice City skyline in view from the water, but no official map has been published.
  • What the far deadlier predators are. Rockstar teases them and stops there.
  • Whether you can hunt in the swamp. The Grassrivers text never mentions hunting, while the Mount Kalaga text does.
  • Which vehicles you can use on the water. Airboats appear in the screenshots and a fan boat in Trailer 1, but Rockstar has not published a vehicle list for the region.
  • Whether the manatees Kotaku spotted in An Extended Look are in Grassrivers or another stretch of swamp.

What it means for you

Expect Grassrivers to be the part of Leonida where the environment fights back. Rockstar chose to show a police chase through the swamp and two separate scenes of people with guns on airboats, which tells you the region is built for getaways and trouble as much as for scenery.

If you want the official look before launch, the Grassrivers Postcard is one of the free wallpapers on rockstargames.com/VI, next to the four screenshots described above. Everything else, from the size of the swamp to what lives in it, is confirmed only when the game arrives on 19 November 2026, and this page will be updated then.

Confirmed or reported

Confirmed by Rockstar are the name, the official text and the four screenshots. The Everglades link is reported by Kotaku and backed by Aaron Garbut's account of filming the Everglades, but no one at Rockstar has said Grassrivers is the Everglades. The GTA 6 map guide shows how Grassrivers fits with the other five regions.
