How Big Is GTA 6? No Size Yet, So Free Up 250GB on Your Console Before 12 November

Updated 2026-11-05

Nobody outside Rockstar knows the GTA 6 file size yet. Rockstar has not published one, the PlayStation Store listing shows no size, and the Xbox listing still carries a small pre-order placeholder instead of the real install, as of 13 October 2026. The working number is 250GB of free space, a margin that outlets have suggested as safe. It is guidance rather than a Rockstar figure, and it is the one to plan around before the preload opens on 12 November.

Sony and Microsoft both publish the steps for freeing space and the rules on which drives can run a current-generation game, and those rules decide whether an external drive helps you at all.

Why plan for 250GB

The only hard reference point is Rockstar's previous open-world release. Red Dead Redemption 2 needed 99GB on PS4 and 107GB on Xbox One when it launched in 2018, as Inverse reported at the time. GTA 6 is built for the current consoles only, so a larger install is a reasonable expectation, but how much larger is guesswork until a store shows the number.

Clearing 250GB covers a very large install plus any launch update with room left over. If the final size turns out smaller, the spare space costs you nothing. If you clear less and the real figure is bigger, the preload stalls on 12 November and you find out at the worst moment.

How much space your console has

The base storage on each console decides how painful this is. Microsoft sells the Xbox Series S with a 512GB or 1TB SSD and the Series X with a 1TB or 2TB SSD. On a 512GB Series S, 250GB is about half of the drive before the system's own reserved space is counted, so most owners of that model will need to remove several games.

Whatever the box says, the usable space is lower. Check the real free figure on the console itself before you start deleting, and write it down so you know how far you have to go.

How to free up space on PS5

These are the steps Sony gives on its PS5 storage support page.

  • Check free space in Settings > Storage.
  • Delete a game in Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps, then pick the game and select Delete. Purchases stay in your game library and can be downloaded again later.
  • Look for Customize next to a game. It lets you delete parts of that game, such as add-ons or sections you have finished, while keeping the rest playable.
  • Move games you want to keep to USB extended storage or to an M.2 SSD instead of deleting them.
  • Back up saves before deleting anything. PlayStation Plus members can upload saved data to cloud storage under Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
  • If the console is linked to your phone, the PlayStation App can manage console storage too.

How to free up space on Xbox Series X|S

On Xbox, installed games are managed from My games & apps, and anything you uninstall stays in your library to reinstall later. Start with the largest games you have finished, because a single big install frees more than a handful of small ones.

If you would rather keep your library installed, Microsoft sells Storage Expansion Cards for both consoles and says they match the performance of the internal SSD. That makes a card the one add-on drive that can hold GTA 6 itself.

Can GTA 6 run from an external hard drive?

Treat an external USB drive as a parking space for your other games. Sony is explicit that PS5 games stored on USB extended storage have to be moved back to console storage or an M.2 SSD before you can play them, so GTA 6 cannot run from a USB drive on PS5.

Microsoft lists USB 3.1 external hard drives as supported storage for Series X|S, but it only promises internal SSD performance from its Storage Expansion Cards. The safe plan on both consoles is to keep GTA 6 on the internal SSD, an M.2 SSD on PS5 or an expansion card on Xbox, and move older games to the USB drive to make room.

Deadline

Have the space free by the evening of 11 November. With automatic downloads on, the preload starts by itself once the store opens it on 12 November, and it cannot start on a full drive.
