Stephen Root Says You Will See Him in GTA 6. Why Brian Heder Is Now His Reported Role

Stephen Root, the actor known for King of the Hill and Office Space, has confirmed he is in GTA 6, and Kotaku and Variety report that he voices Brian Heder, the veteran Keys drug runner who gives Jason Duval a place to live. Asked about the game by the Associated Press at the BAFTA TV Tea Party, Root said, "Yeah, you're gonna see me in there." Rockstar itself has not credited him or anyone else in the cast.

Root also said people had recognised his voice from King of the Hill in Rockstar's earlier footage, which is how the casting became an open secret long before he said a word. Kotaku, reporting the news on 14 September 2026, noted that his voice was heard prominently in An Extended Look and called him the first confirmed GTA 6 voice actor.

Why Stephen Root fits Brian

Variety, reporting the casting on 15 September 2026, added that Root was born and raised in Florida and went to the University of Florida. Leonida is widely reported as Rockstar's take on Florida, and Variety itself calls the Leonida Keys a fictional locale inspired by the Florida Keys, so a Florida native voicing the old smuggler of the Keys is a tidy match. Beyond King of the Hill, Root is known for playing Milton in the 1999 comedy Office Space and for HBO's Barry.

He also told the AP that his character was already in Rockstar's first rollout of footage, and that too many people knew his voice for the secret to last. Players who heard a familiar voice in the trailers were, by his own account, right.

Who Brian Heder is, per Rockstar

Rockstar's profile calls Brian a classic drug runner from the golden age of smuggling in the Keys. He still moves product through his boat yard with his third wife, Lori, and he has been around long enough to let other people do his dirty work. His tagline is "Nothing better than a Mudslide at sunset."

The two lines quoted on his page set the tone. One is a brag that he hauled so much grass in that plane he could make the state of Leonida levitate. The other describes him as a man who looks like a Leonida beach bum but moves like a great white shark.

Brian's deal with Jason

Brian matters to the story because of one arrangement. He is letting Jason live rent-free at one of his properties, so long as Jason helps with local shakedowns and stops by for Lori's sangria once in a while. That makes Brian both landlord and employer, and it explains why Jason's own profile has him working for local drug runners in the Keys.

Cal Hampton, Jason's friend, is described as a fellow associate of Brian's, so Brian sits at the centre of Jason's circle. Rockstar's screenshots show Brian holding a package and pointing at another man in a plane, leaning on a railing with two cans in front of him, riding in a car with Jason at the wheel, and handing Jason a handgun in front of a pickup truck while a woman stands behind him. Rockstar does not name that woman.

What Trailer 2 showed of Brian

Brian was introduced on 6 May 2025, alongside Trailer 2. IGN's breakdown of that trailer says he appears early as Jason's landlord, and that his business, Brian's Boat Works and Marina, turns up later in the footage. That fits Root's own account, since he told the AP that fans recognised his character from Rockstar's first rollout of footage.

Lori, Brian's third wife

Lori is Brian's third wife, she moves product through the boat yard with him, and her sangria is written into Jason's rent deal. That is all Rockstar has said about her. She has no profile of her own, and the woman beside Brian in one official screenshot is not identified as Lori, so treat any claim about her look or her role in the story as a guess.

What is still unknown about Brian

Rockstar has not said how long Jason's arrangement with Brian lasts, what the shakedowns involve, whether Brian turns on Jason or the other way round, or how Brian connects to the criminal conspiracy in the official synopsis. Root's casting is also only reported for now. It becomes official when Rockstar credits the cast, which it has not done for any GTA 6 role. If you want an official image of him in the meantime, Brian has his own piece in the Artwork & Wallpapers set on rockstargames.com/VI.
